Devorah the Prophetess

Text: Judges 3-5

Size: 11"x14"

In Judges 3-5, Devorah tells a prophesy that the war the Israelites are engaging in at the time will be won by a woman. Barak, the head of the Israelite army, scoffs at the suggestion. However, Yael, the wife of a Kenite and an Israelite sympathizer, does ultimately kill Cisera, the head of the enemy army, thereby winning the war. Devorah’s song follows Yael’s brave actions, extolling the victory and the woman’s role in it. This piece portrays Devorah sitting under her iconic palm tree, where she would serve as judge and prophetess for Israel.
