When the king of Persia kicked out his queen, Vashti, he held a beauty contest to find a new queen. Esther's uncle, Mordechai, encouraged her to enter, and she won, becoming the first Jewish queen of Persia. The king's adviser, Haman, however, had it in for the Jews and got a decree signed by the king that all the Jews of the capital, Shushan, would be hanged on gallows. Esther bravely fasted for three days and approached the king -- in a country where anyone approaching the king uninvited, even his queen, could be punished by death -- but he listened to her, and Haman was hanged on the gallows he had built for the Jews.
