Parashat (Torah Portion) K’doshim primarily consists of what scholars call The Holiness Code. The bulk of the portion is a long series of laws and instructions to provide the Israelites with a base for being k’doshim, holy. The images within the letters illustrate a variety of the laws within this code:
- Koof:
o On every seventh day, to keep and remember the Sabbath
o Honor your mother and father
- Daled:
o Leave the corners of your fields for the widowed and the orphan
o When harvesting your vineyard, leave the edges for the poor
- Shin:
o Do not mix two kinds of seeds in one field, nor two kinds of fiber in one cloth
o When you reach the Promised Land and plant trees, for the first three years it bears fruit, you shall not touch the fruit. On the fourth year, the fruit belongs to God. On the fifth year and beyond, you should harvest the fruit and enjoy them.
- Yud:
o Do not let a day-laborer’s wages stay with you until morning
o The phrase “I am YHVH” (the unpronounceable four-letter “real name” of God) punctuates many of the laws to emphasize their importance.
- Mem:
o You shall deal justly in your judgments, not favoring the poor or the wealthy, but pursuing true justice.
o Do not place a stumbling block before the blind, and assist your elders.
o The portion concludes with a statement of the overall point of all these laws, quoted in dark blue: “You shall keep my laws, and you will be holy, for I am YHVH your God.”
