Parashat (Torah Portion) Ki Teitzei outlines a variety of laws for civil and domestic life, including rules of found property, rooftop building safety, vows, treatment of domestic animals, and prompt payment of workers, among many more. This piece focuses on the laws of gleaning: when a worker harvests crops – barley, olives, and grapes are specifically mentioned – he should leave any dropped sheaves or fruit for the widow, the orphan, and the stranger. In biblical culture, widows, orphans, and strangers were the most disadvantaged in society and often are mentioned to represent any people whose social or economic status would make supporting themselves difficult. This portion reminds us that, whatever we do in life, it is more important to consider those whose lives are more difficult than our own than to gather every last fruit of our labor.
