Text: Megillat Esther 1-2

Size: 8"x10"

The holiday of Purim is a raucous and joyous occasion, marked by the reading of the Megillah (the book of Esther), during which the congregation cheers for Esther and Mordechai, and we boo and make noises with our graggers (shown here with the Hebrew for Purim on its side) every time Haman's name is mentioned. We celebrate the Jews' survival with sweets such as hamentaschen (literally "Haman's ears," though also known as "Haman's hat") stuffed with a variety of fruit preserves, chocolate, or poppy. We also wear masks and costumes to commemorate Esther's bravery in hiding her secret -- that she was a Jew -- long enough, and revealing herself to the king just n time to save the Jews from Haman's evil plans.
